My cousin, Lorraine Smith, known to the family as “Billy Boy” was the first Aboriginal Nurse at the Gympie Hospital. She had just finished school in 1955 and had decided to become a nurse. I am not sure why she decided to follow this path. It was every unusual at the time. She originally worked under Matron Rosanne and then later Sister Cecil.
