The Rainbow Beach Road was officially opened on Saturday 29 March 1966 by the Queensland Premier, the Honourable Sir Frank Nicklin.
The dignitaries that attended included: Alderman Ron Witham (Mayor of Gympie), Councillor W.H. (Bill) Kidd (Chairman, Widgee Shire Council) and Mr A.M. (Max) Hodges, MLA.

The road was built at a cost of $235,000 and the Council surveyed, designed and constructed the road. The cost was divided between Qld Titanium Mines ($130,000), State Government ($81,000) and the Widgee Shire Council ($24,000).
It was a busy day for the Premier and the entourage with a visit to the Queensland Titanium Mines, Tin Can Bay and the Rainbow Beach Surf Life Saver’s Club. A dinner was held at the Sleepy Lagoon Motel in Tin Can Bay.
